How Detection Dogs Stop Wildlife Trafficking
Poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking are stripping Africa of its biodiversity. The criminal trade in ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales, and bushmeat fuels violence, strains governments, and threatens the wild places we all share.
Meet Will Powell, a British dog trainer with more than 30 years of experience working with specialist canines. Recognising the untapped power of detection dogs to fight wildlife crime, he began training dogs and handlers to track poachers and sniff out illegal wildlife products.
OBJECTIVES
Kuru is committed to providing trained conservation dogs and support to conservation dog programs, conservancies and NGOs tackling the illegal wildlife trade in Africa. We want to see dogs being used more extensively as effective tools in reducing poaching and trafficking.
